Guide to using “book search”

1.About books that can be searched

1-1.Types of book collections

The search targets of this service are the approximately 87,000 books that are filed at the Kadokawa Musashino Museum, and books that the museum holds at closed-shelf storerooms and so on. The types and filed quantities of the books are as follows.

*The “books” include manga, magazines, mooks, and so on.

*Number of books as of February 1, 2024

[Manga & Light Novel Library]
Approximately 31,000 Japanese light novels, and approximately 7,000 titles of manga and children’s books that have been published by Kadokawa

[Edit Town - Book Street]
Approximately 25,000 books under the supervision of curator Seigow Matsuoka

[Bookshelf Theater]
Approximately 20,000 titles that are publications of Kadokawa; books in the private collections of Genyoshi Kadokawa, Kenkichi Yamamoto, Rizo Takeuchi, and Shuzen Hokama; and books related to special exhibitions

[Attic Step]
Approximately 3,000 titles of the Hiroshi Aramata Book Collection

[Musashino Corridor]
Approximately 300 books related to Musashino

1-2.Placing requests for closed-shelf books

In addition to the books that are filed at the shelves inside the museum (open-shelf), the museum has books that it holds at closed-shelf storerooms.
It is possible to view some of the closed-shelf books by making an inquiry at the counter.

2.About “book-collection search” function

2-1.Simple search

If searching with the word “ ” for example, it will be possible find book-related information that contains “ ” and this includes bibliographic information and synopses.

・Please enter words for the search into the input field, and then click/tap on the “search” button.

・If multiple words separated by spaces are entered, books related to all the words will be searched for (with an “and” search).

・If the search conditions on the right side of the input field are switched to “or,” all books related to at least one of the input words will be searched for.

・Clicking/tapping on the “clear” button will delete all of the words that have been input up to that point.

・If some type of book has been found in the search results, a “list of search results” will be shown.

2-2.Advanced search

Clicking/tapping on “advanced search” will make it possible to search based on more detailed conditions.

[Book title]
This is a search based on the title of the book. An “and” search, or an “or” search is possible.

[Author]
This is a search based on the author of the book. An “and” search, or an “or” search is possible.

[Publisher]
This is a search based the names of publishers, government agencies, and individuals who were involved in the production and sale of the book. An “and” search, or an “or” search is possible.

[ISBN / magazine code]
This is a search based on ISBN or magazine code assigned to the book.

[Publication year]
This is a search based on the year in which the book was published.

[Book collection classification]
It is possible to select whether the book is categorized as a general book, manga, or magazine.

[Japanese/foreign classification]
Books written only in Japanese are categorized as “Japanese books,” and books written in any other language are categorized as “foreign books.”

[Between items]It is possible to search based on the language that is used for the main text of the book.

[Match location]
“Prefix match” searches for books regarding which the entered word matches the beginning of a character string that is included in the related information. “Partial match” searches for books regarding which the entered word matches one part of a character string that is included in the related information. “Suffix match” searches for books regarding which the entered word matches the end of a character string that is included in the related information. “Exact match” searches for books regarding which the entered word exactly matches a character string that is included in the related information. With “fuzzy search,” it is possible to search based on an entered word, without worrying about whether the word contains spaces or symbols, etc.

[Sort]
The list of search results can be arranged in “book-title ascending/descending order,” “author ascending/descending order,” “publication-year ascending/descending order,” “order of relevance,” or “database-registration order.”

[Book-cover photo]
This is for selecting whether to show or hide book-cover photos in the list of search results.

[Number of results shown]
This is for changing the number of search results shown.

3.About list of search results

3-1.Shown information

The following book-related items are shown in the list of search results.

・Book-cover photo

・Book title

・Author

・Publisher

・Publication date

・Location

・ISBN

・Browse

・Tags

・Month and year of issue (if volume in series)

・Explanatory notes

Ordinarily, the book-cover photos are hidden, the number of results shown is 20, and the list is shown in order of relevance. These settings can be changed according to one’s preference.

3-2.Refine results

On the left side of the list of search results, the following facets are shown (for faceted navigation): “location,” “publisher,” and “book collection category,” Clicking/tapping on these conditions will add them to the search, and this will make it possible to further narrow the search.

3-3.Re-search

If “re-search” is clicked/tapped on, the current search conditions will be shown. By adding changes and clicking/tapping on the “search” button, it will be possible to perform another search with different conditions.

3-4.Number and order of results shown

It is possible to change the order of search results as follows by clicking/tapping on the relevant location.

・Number of results shown
It is possible to choose “20” or “50.”

・Order of results shown
Results can be shown in the following orders.
Book-title ascending order / Book-title descending order
Author ascending order / Author descending order
Publication-year ascending order / Publication-year descending order
Order of relevance
Database-registration order

“Ascending” is the order in which the value grows larger, such as “1, 2, 3...” and “descending” is the opposite of this. The search results are shown in the order of “あ, い, う...” in the case of the Japanese syllabary, and “a, b, c...” in the case of the alphabet, or in the reverse order of such.

3-5.Show/hide book-cover photos

It is possible to show or hide book-cover photos in the search results.

4.About details

4-1.Shown information

By clicking/tapping on a specific book in the list of search results, it is possible to show detailed information on the book referred to as “bibliographic details.” Under “bibliographic details,” the following information is shown. [Bibliographic information] This is information in the bibliography of the book.

・Location / Specific location / shelf number

・Whether viewing is possible

4-2.Specific location

By clicking/tapping on “check specific location,” it is possible to check the specific location of the book within the museum on a map. In the case of some specific locations, the shelf may be shown with an “elevational view” rather than a “floor-plan view.”

4-3.A Thousand Nights, a Thousand Books

In the case that the book is introduced on the website “Seigow Matsuoka’s a Thousand Nights, a Thousand Books,” a portion of the introduction will be shown. By clicking/tapping on “read more,” the entire text of such can be read at the external website.

4-4.Bookmeter

In the case that there is a review of the book on the website “Bookmeter,” a portion of the review will be shown. By clicking/tapping on “read more,” the entire text of such can be read at the external website.
